A Home, Not a Metaphor, The Real Thing
This series was created at Het Vijfde Seizoen (The Fifth Season), a residence for artists on the grounds of the psychiatric institution the Willem Arntsz Hoeve in Den Dolder, the Netherlands. I lived and worked there for the summer of 2013 with my husband (also an invited artist) and our two sons. I asked the patients to take me to a place that gave them a sense of hope or calm.
The series includes pieces entitled ...Patient Observed, spaces I was taken to by a patient. ...Anonymous Observed, places I saw repeatedly inhabited by the same patient. And ...Personnal Observed, spaces and buildings that I personally needed to capture. The paintings are all 22" high and hung abutted like a film strip that portray a single psychiatric facility from several different perspectives.
